Resident Training Permit

The Resident Training Permit is a new category and will be required for all "residents" (physicians in a post graduate training program) who are practicing medicine in South Dakota. The application and this Web page likely have new versions coming. Please continue to monitor this page and the Board of Medicine Home page for the latest information.

If you receive an application or associated forms from a source other than directly from this office or its official Web site, the documents may be outdated or not official versions. Application forms will be rejected if not on the current version.

Please note that an initial training permit will vary in duration dependant upon its issuance date.

Important to know about the South Dakota Resident Training Permit:

  • No fee
  • Required for all residents in a post graduate training programs, whether in South Dakota or out of South Dakota including all PGY1 to end of PG training
  • Cannot be used to “moonlight” or work outside of the residency program
  • Training permit issuance does not guarantee future South Dakota Resident Certificate
  • Training permit issuance does not guarantee future South Dakota Medical Licensure
  • The Permit application process has been streamlined, with the residency programs providing documentation from the resident’s available ERAS file
  • Permits will expire June 30.
  • Subsequent renewal will be on or before June 30 annually

Applicant Instructions:

  • Have your residency forward current ERAS file
  • Read and complete the Resident Training Permit Application (PDF download) and mail Board office
  • There is no fee required
  • Additional Applicant Requirements: once the application is reviewed, the applicant will receive instructions in writing
  • Personal Appearance at Board Discretion
  • Once issued, the Permit Documents will be emailed directly to the Resident Permit Holder-forwarding this information to other entities such as the facility for credentialing or other purposes is entirely the responsibility of the Resident Permit Holder
